Study Protocol Announcement

We are pleased to announce our latest research protocol titled “Physical Exercises to Prevent and Rehabilitate Hospital-Associated Disability in Hospitalised Older People: A Living Systematic Review with Network Meta-Analysis”. This study aims to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of physical exercise interventions in preventing and rehabilitating hospital-associated disability (HAD) in older adults aged 65 and above who are hospitalised in acute care settings.
Background: Hospital-associated disability (HAD) refers to the loss of independence in daily activities due to hospitalisation. This condition significantly impacts the quality of life of older adults, increasing the risk of nursing home placement and caregiver burden.
Objectives: The research will assess various physical exercise modalities, such as resistance training and aerobic exercises, to determine their effectiveness in preventing and rehabilitating HAD. Factors like training intensity, volume, and frequency that may influence the outcomes will also be explored.
Methods: A living systematic review of randomised controlled trials will be conducted, including a network meta-analysis. This approach allows for continuous updates and comparisons of different exercise interventions, providing a comprehensive understanding of their effectiveness.
Discussion: The network meta-analysis will integrate multiple comparisons within one analytical framework, evaluate the comparative effectiveness of each exercise modality, and establish a hierarchy of interventions. This will help in identifying the most effective strategies to prevent and rehabilitate HAD.
